What Internet Speed Do You Need for IPTV in the UK?
How much broadband speed IPTV needs for SD, HD and 4K, how many screens your line can handle, and how UK fibre, cable and 4G compare.

Short answer: plan for at least 15–20 Mbps for a single HD or Full HD stream and 40 Mbps or more for 4K. Add more headroom for every extra screen watching at the same time.
Recommended speeds by quality
| Quality | Suggested minimum | Comfortable |
|---|---|---|
| SD | 8 Mbps | 10+ Mbps |
| HD / Full HD | 15 Mbps | 20–30 Mbps |
| 4K UHD | 40 Mbps | 50+ Mbps |
These figures are per stream and include headroom, because live TV bitrates rise during fast-moving scenes such as football.
Stability beats raw speed
A steady 30 Mbps line will usually give a better live TV experience than a 200 Mbps line that drops out. Wi-Fi interference, distance from the router and evening congestion matter as much as the package speed. If you can, connect your main TV by Ethernet.
How many screens can your broadband handle?
Add the speeds together for everything happening at once. For example, a 4K stream in the lounge (40 Mbps), an HD stream upstairs (15 Mbps) and normal phone use (10 Mbps) needs around 65 Mbps of reliable bandwidth.
The number of screens your account can stream on at the same time also depends on your account set-up — tell support what you need when you choose a plan.
UK broadband types compared
- Full fibre (FTTP) — the best option: fast, stable and low latency.
- Cable — usually fast and fine for multiple 4K streams.
- Part fibre (FTTC) — typically 30–80 Mbps; good for HD and often 4K on one screen, depending on distance from the cabinet.
- 4G / 5G home broadband — workable, but speeds vary with signal and time of day. Test before relying on it for live sport.
How to test properly
- Run the test on the TV device, not your phone.
- Test in the evening, when UK networks are busiest.
- Run it a few times and look at the lowest result.

Test it on your own line
The best test is real viewing at peak time. Request a free trial on our UK server and watch a live channel on your main TV in the evening.
