What Is EPG in IPTV? How the TV Guide Works and How to Fix It

EPG is the on-screen TV guide in your IPTV app. Learn how it works, why it sometimes shows 'No information' and how to fix a missing or wrong IPTV guide.

EPG stands for Electronic Programme Guide. It's the grid that shows what's on now and next on each channel — the IPTV equivalent of the guide on a Freeview or satellite box. A good EPG is the difference between flicking aimlessly through channels and finding the match or film you want in seconds.

How the IPTV guide works

The guide data is a separate file from the video streams, usually in a format called XMLTV. Each channel in your list has an ID, and your app matches that ID to the schedule in the guide file. When the IDs match, the programme titles, times and descriptions appear.

With an Xtream Codes login, the guide normally loads automatically. With an M3U playlist, some apps need a separate EPG link — see Xtream Codes vs M3U.

What the EPG lets you do

  • See what's on now and later across every channel
  • Read programme descriptions before tuning in
  • Set reminders in apps that support them
  • Open catch-up on supported channels to replay recent programmes straight from the guide

Common EPG problems and fixes

The guide says “No information”

  1. Open the app's settings and choose to update or refresh the EPG.
  2. If you use an M3U link, check whether the app has a separate EPG URL field and that it's filled in.
  3. Restart the app, then restart the device.
  4. Give the guide a few minutes to download — large guides can take a while on slower devices.

Programme times are an hour out

This is almost always a time-zone setting. Make sure the device is set to UK time (GMT/BST) and look for an EPG time shift option in the app. Set it to 0 for UK channels; adjust by one hour if the clocks have just changed and the guide hasn't caught up.

Only some channels have a guide

Some channels — particularly event and pop-up channels — don't carry schedule data. If a regular channel is missing its guide, refresh the EPG and tell support which channel it is.

The guide is slow on a Firestick

Older sticks have limited memory. Limit the guide to fewer days in the app settings, hide channel groups you never watch and clear the app cache. Our buffering guide covers more performance tips.

Apps with strong EPG features

On Android TV and Firestick, apps such as TiviMate are known for a traditional, grid-style guide. On Samsung and LG TVs, the guide depends on the player you install. Our IPTV app guide walks through the options by device.
