Xtream Codes vs M3U: Which IPTV Login Should You Use?

When you subscribe to an IPTV service you normally receive your access in one of two forms: an Xtream Codes login or an M3U playlist URL. Both point your app at the same channels — they just do it differently.
Xtream Codes login
Xtream Codes (often shown in apps as “Xtream API”) uses three details:
- Server URL — the address of the service, for example
http://server-address:port - Username
- Password
Once entered, the app asks the server for everything it needs: live channels, categories, the EPG, movies and series — usually with artwork and descriptions.
M3U playlist
An M3U is a single URL pointing to a text file that lists every channel and its stream address. Nearly every IPTV player and media player (including VLC) can open one.
The trade-off is that an M3U on its own doesn't always include the guide, and on-demand content may appear as long flat lists. Many apps have a separate field for an EPG (XMLTV) URL.

Which should you use?
Use Xtream Codes if your app supports it. It's quicker to type on a TV remote, loads the guide automatically and gives a tidier on-demand library. Use M3U for apps that don't offer an Xtream option, or for desktop media players.
Some Smart TV apps don't accept either directly on the TV — instead you upload your playlist on the app's website using the TV's MAC address or device key. Our Samsung vs LG guide explains how that works.
