Samsung vs LG Smart TV for IPTV: Apps, Activation and Limits

How IPTV works on Samsung (Tizen) and LG (webOS) Smart TVs: which apps to use, MAC address activation, common limits and when to add a streaming stick.

Samsung uses its own Tizen operating system and LG uses webOS. Neither runs Android apps, so you can't sideload an APK. Instead you install an IPTV player from the TV's own app store — and the way you add your login is often a little different.

How activation usually works

Many Samsung and LG IPTV players link your playlist to the TV itself rather than asking you to type a long URL with the remote:

  1. Install the player from the Samsung Apps or LG Content Store.
  2. Open it and note the MAC address or device key it displays.
  3. Visit the app's website on your phone or computer and upload your Xtream Codes login or M3U link against that MAC address.
  4. Restart the app on the TV — your channels appear.

Some of these apps are free for a trial period and then charge a small activation fee paid to the app developer, not to your IPTV provider. Other apps let you enter an Xtream Codes login directly on the TV.

Samsung (Tizen)

  • Good performance on most models from roughly 2018 onwards.
  • App availability differs by model year and region.
  • If an app disappears from the store, an already-installed copy usually keeps working, but you may not be able to reinstall it.

LG (webOS)

  • Smooth interface and Magic Remote pointer make long lists easy.
  • Older webOS versions have fewer IPTV apps to choose from.
  • Check the Content Store on your TV — listings vary by model.

Common limits on Smart TV apps

  • Fewer player settings than Android apps (buffer, decoder, etc.).
  • Guide features vary considerably between apps.
  • Older TVs can be slower with very large channel lists — hiding groups you don't watch helps.

When to add a streaming stick

If your TV is older, the app you want isn't available, or you want features such as a grid guide with catch-up, plugging in a Fire TV Stick or Android TV device is the quickest fix. See Firestick vs Android TV box to choose one.

Setting it up

Our Smart TV setup steps walk through installation on both brands, and our IPTV app guide lists player options. If you'd like help, mention your TV model when you request a free trial and we'll send instructions for that set.
