Firestick vs Android TV Box for IPTV: Which Should You Buy?
Fire TV Stick or Android TV box for IPTV? Compare price, performance, app choice, Ethernet and 4K support to choose the right streaming device in the UK.
By the Best IPTV UK team · Updated · 7 min read
If your TV's own apps are limited, a streaming device plugged into the HDMI port is the easiest upgrade. In the UK the two most common options are an Amazon Fire TV Stick and an Android TV / Google TV box. Both run IPTV players well, but they suit different people.
The quick verdict
- Choose a Fire TV Stick 4K or 4K Max if you want a simple, affordable device with a familiar remote and you're happy on Wi-Fi.
- Choose an Android TV box (such as an Nvidia Shield or a well-reviewed Google TV device) if you want Ethernet built in, more storage and the widest choice of apps.
Head-to-head
| Fire TV Stick 4K / 4K Max | Android TV / Google TV box | |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Very simple | Simple; more settings to explore |
| Installing IPTV apps | Amazon Appstore or Downloader app | Google Play or APK |
| Ethernet | Via adapter | Often built in |
| Storage & memory | Limited; clear cache regularly | Usually more, depending on model |
| 4K & HDR | Yes on 4K models | Yes on most current models |
| Portability | Excellent — fits in a pocket | Less portable |
Performance: what actually matters
For IPTV, the things that make a difference are memory (RAM), the video decoder and the network connection. Large channel lists and a full seven-day guide use a lot of memory, which is why the basic Fire TV Stick can feel sluggish compared with the 4K Max. Whichever device you choose, make sure it supports H.265/HEVC decoding.
Wi-Fi vs Ethernet
A wired connection is the single biggest upgrade for live sport. Android TV boxes often include an Ethernet port; on a Firestick you'll need an adapter. If you must use Wi-Fi, connect to the 5 GHz band.
Avoid unbranded “pre-loaded” boxes
Cheap boxes sold as “fully loaded” often run outdated, insecure versions of Android and may come with unknown apps installed. A reputable, certified Android TV or Google TV device receives updates and gives you a clean starting point.
Our recommendation
For most UK homes, a Fire TV Stick 4K Max is the best balance of price and performance. If you watch a lot of live sport, want Ethernet without adapters, or run IPTV on your main TV every day, an Android TV box is worth the extra.
