Kodi Simple IPTV: Set Up PVR IPTV Simple Client

How to watch IPTV in Kodi with the official PVR IPTV Simple Client add-on: install it, add your M3U playlist and XMLTV guide, and fix common problems.

By the Best IPTV UK team · Updated · 7 min read

Kodi Simple IPTV refers to PVR IPTV Simple Client, the official Kodi add-on for live TV playlists. It reads an M3U playlist and an XMLTV programme guide, then places your channels inside Kodi's own TV section — complete with a grid guide, channel groups and, where your provider supports it, catch-up.

Kodi is free, open-source software that runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and Android TV, Fire TV and Raspberry Pi. It has no built-in channels; you add your provider's playlist.

What you need

  • Kodi installed from the official Kodi website or your device's app store
  • Your M3U playlist URL from your IPTV provider
  • Optionally, an XMLTV (EPG) URL for the programme guide

New to playlist links? Read how M3U playlists work first.

Step 1: Install PVR IPTV Simple Client

  1. Open Kodi and go to Add-ons.
  2. Select Install from repository (or the open-box icon), then Kodi Add-on repository.
  3. Open PVR clients.
  4. Select PVR IPTV Simple Client and choose Install.

On some systems the add-on is already present but disabled; in that case choose Enable instead.

Step 2: Add your playlist

  1. Open the add-on's Configure screen.
  2. Under General, set Location to Remote path (Internet address).
  3. Paste your M3U playlist URL into M3U playlist URL.
  4. Leave caching enabled unless your provider advises otherwise.

Step 3: Add the TV guide

  1. Go to the EPG section of the same settings screen.
  2. Set Location to Remote path and paste your XMLTV URL.
  3. If times are wrong, adjust the EPG time shift — or better, check Kodi's own time zone under Settings → Interface → Regional.

If the playlist already includes a guide address in its header, the add-on may pick it up automatically.

Step 4: Restart and watch

Select OK, then restart Kodi. Open TV from the main menu: you'll see channels, groups and the guide. The first guide import can take a few minutes for large playlists.

Troubleshooting

  • "No PVR add-on enabled" or empty TV menu: make sure the add-on is enabled and Kodi was restarted.
  • Playlist loads but no guide: check the XMLTV URL and that channel IDs in the playlist match the guide. EPG fixes.
  • Old channel list after changes: clear the TV data under Settings → PVR & Live TV → General → Clear data, then restart.

Stay with official add-ons

Kodi itself is legal and safe. Problems come from unofficial "builds" and third-party add-ons that bundle unlicensed streams or unsafe code. PVR IPTV Simple Client from the official repository only plays the playlist you give it. More on this in is IPTV safe?
