M3U IPTV Playlists Explained: Format, Setup and Editing

What an M3U IPTV playlist is, how the #EXTM3U and #EXTINF format works, how to load a playlist in common apps, add a TV guide and edit or tidy a channel list.

An M3U IPTV playlist is a plain-text file that lists TV channels and the internet address of each stream. Your IPTV app reads the file, shows the channel names in order, and plays the matching stream when you select one. Most providers give you either an M3U link or an Xtream Codes login — and many apps accept both.

What's inside an M3U file

Open an M3U in a text editor and you'll see something like this:

#EXTM3U url-tvg="http://guide.example/epg.xml"
#EXTINF:-1 tvg-id="news.uk" tvg-name="News 24" tvg-logo="http://logo.example/news.png" group-title="News",News 24
http://stream.example/live/username/password/1001.ts
#EXTINF:-1 tvg-id="sport1.uk" group-title="Sport",Sports 1
http://stream.example/live/username/password/1002.ts
PartWhat it does
#EXTM3UHeader that marks the file as an extended M3U playlist. Can include a guide address.
#EXTINF:-1Starts a channel entry. -1 means a live stream with no fixed length.
tvg-idLinks the channel to its programme listings in the XMLTV guide.
tvg-name / tvg-logoName and logo the app displays.
group-titleThe category, such as News or Sport, used to group channels.
The line afterThe stream address the app actually plays.

Because stream addresses often contain your username and password, treat your playlist link like a password: don't share or post it.

M3U vs M3U8

The structure is the same. M3U8 signals UTF-8 text encoding, which displays accented and non-Latin channel names correctly. You'll also see .m3u8 used for individual HLS video streams — a related but separate use of the format.

How to load an M3U playlist

AppWhere to paste the link
TiviMateAdd playlist → M3U playlist (TiviMate guide)
IPTV Smarters ProLoad your playlist or file/URL (Smarters guide)
Smart IPTV (Samsung/LG)Developer's upload page, against the TV's MAC address (Smart IPTV guide)
KodiPVR IPTV Simple Client → M3U playlist URL (Kodi guide)
VLCMedia → Open Network Stream (no full guide)

Adding the programme guide

An M3U lists channels, not schedules. The guide comes from a separate XMLTV file. If your playlist header already contains a url-tvg address, many apps load the guide automatically. Otherwise, paste the EPG link from your provider into the app's guide settings. Channels match their listings through tvg-id, so a channel with a missing or wrong ID will show "No information". Editing and tidying a playlist

Large playlists can be slow, especially on streaming sticks. Options:

  • Hide groups in your app. Most players let you hide whole categories without touching the file — the simplest and safest option.
  • Edit a local copy. A text editor can remove or reorder entries. Keep each #EXTINF line with the stream line beneath it.
  • Use a playlist editor. Third-party IPTV editor tools and services can filter groups, rename channels and match guide IDs. They need your playlist link, so only use ones you trust.

Note that a downloaded copy won't pick up channel changes your provider makes later; a live link always stays current.

M3U or Xtream Codes?

If your app supports it, an Xtream Codes login is usually the better choice: it loads the guide, movies and series automatically. M3U is the universal fallback that almost every player understands. See the full comparison in Xtream Codes vs M3U.

Avoid public playlist lists

Lists of "free" playlists shared online often contain unlicensed streams, dead links or addresses that log your IP. For genuinely free, legal TV, see our guide to free IPTV options.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between M3U and M3U8?

Both use the same playlist structure. M3U8 indicates the file is UTF-8 encoded, which handles accented and non-Latin characters reliably. The extension .m3u8 is also used by the HLS streaming format for individual video streams.

Can I open an M3U playlist in VLC?

Yes. VLC can open an M3U URL as a network stream and list the channels. It does not show a full TV guide, so a dedicated IPTV player is better for everyday viewing.

Why does my M3U playlist have no TV guide?

An M3U file lists channels and stream addresses, but the programme guide is usually a separate XMLTV file. Add the EPG link from your provider in your app's guide settings, or use an Xtream Codes login, which usually loads the guide automatically.

Is it safe to use M3U playlists found online?

Playlists shared publicly can contain unlicensed streams, broken links or tracking addresses. Use the playlist supplied by your own provider and keep it private, because the link usually contains your account details.
