What Is an IPTV Subscription? What You Actually Get

What an IPTV subscription includes: the login, live channels, TV guide and on-demand content, how connections and billing work, and what isn't included.

An IPTV subscription is paid access to an IPTV service for a set period. In practice, you're buying a login. That login lets an IPTV player app on your device load the provider's live channels, programme guide and on-demand library.

What's included

  • Your login — usually an Xtream Codes login (server URL, username, password) and/or an M3U playlist link. See Xtream Codes vs M3U.
  • Live channels grouped into categories such as entertainment, news, sport and kids.
  • A TV guide (EPG) showing what's on now and next.
  • Catch-up on supported channels, and an on-demand library of films and series, depending on the provider.
  • Support for setup and technical problems.

What isn't included

  • The device — you use your own Smart TV, stick, box, phone or computer.
  • The player app — made by independent developers. Many are free; some charge for premium features.
  • Broadband — you need your own connection.
  • A TV Licence — in the UK you need one to watch or record live TV as it's broadcast, on any channel and any device.

How billing works

Providers generally use one of two models:

ModelHow it worksWatch out for
One-time paymentPay once for a fixed period (e.g. 3 or 12 months)Check what happens when the period ends
RecurringCharged automatically every month or yearRenewal dates and how to cancel

Best IPTV UK uses one-time payments only — nothing renews automatically.

Connections and devices

A connection is one stream playing at a time. You can usually install your login on several devices, but the number that can stream simultaneously depends on your account. If two people in your home watch at once, ask about this before you buy.

Subscription length

Longer subscriptions almost always cost less per month. A short plan is a good way to test real-world use after a trial; a longer plan makes sense once you know the service works for your household.
