What Is IPTV? A Simple Definition for UK Viewers
What IPTV means, the three types of IPTV content, how it differs from Freeview, satellite and streaming apps, and what you need to watch it in the UK.

IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) is television delivered over an internet connection instead of through an aerial, satellite dish or cable network. You watch it through an app on a smart TV, streaming stick, set-top box, phone or computer.
That's the whole idea. The rest of this guide explains what IPTV delivers, how it compares with other ways of watching TV in the UK, and what you need to get started. If you want the technical detail — servers, streams and buffering — read how IPTV works.
The three types of IPTV content
- Live TV — channels streamed in real time, just as they are broadcast, with an on-screen programme guide (EPG).
- Catch-up (time-shifted TV) — recent programmes you can replay from the guide on channels that support it. See what IPTV catch-up is.
- Video on demand (VOD) — a library of films and series you can start, pause and resume at any time.
IPTV vs other ways of watching TV
| How it arrives | Live channels | On demand | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freeview | Aerial | Yes | Via separate apps |
| Satellite / cable | Dish or cable line | Yes | Through the provider's box |
| Streaming apps | Internet | Mostly no | Yes |
| IPTV | Internet | Yes | Yes |
Is IPTV the same as streaming?
They use the same underlying technology, but people usually mean different things. “Streaming” tends to describe on-demand services built around a single library. “IPTV” describes a service that bundles live channels with a TV guide, often alongside catch-up and on-demand content — closer to a traditional TV package, just delivered over broadband.
Technically, the term IPTV originally referred to TV delivered over a provider's own managed network. In everyday UK use, it now mostly means live TV subscriptions watched through an app over any broadband connection.
What do you need to watch IPTV?
- A compatible device — Smart TV, Fire TV Stick, Android TV box, Apple TV, phone, tablet or computer. See supported devices.
- Broadband — roughly 15–20 Mbps for HD and 40 Mbps+ for 4K. More in our speed guide.
- An IPTV player app — compare options in our IPTV app guide.
- A subscription — the login that gives the app access to channels. Read what an IPTV subscription includes.
Is IPTV legal?
IPTV is a legal technology used by many licensed broadcasters. Whether a particular stream is lawful depends on whether the content is licensed. We explain this carefully in is IPTV legal in the UK?
